HISTORY

The federation of Iraqi Associations in Sweden (FIAS) is a non-profit making organisation representing the Iraqi minority in Sweden. FIAS was founded on the 16th September 1995 in Stockholm by 13 Iraqi associations from 8 Swedish towns.

Since then the number of member organisations has risen from the original 13 to 51 in 2003. The member organisations are spread all over Sweden from Malmoe in the south to Pieea in the north.

Today FIAS is recognised by the Swedish State as the official representative of the Iraqi minority in Sweden. We represent directly over 13 000 Iraqis and indirectly over 60 000 Iraqis (both members and non-members).

THE ACTIVITY

Our main activity has the Iraqi group as its main target: the status, the possibilities and the visions of the Iraqi group as well as its chances to develop and contribute to the development of the society we are living in.

We co-operate with a range of organisations and institutions such as: the Swedish government, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The National Board for Migrant issues, The National Board for Integration, local authorities, Safe The Children (Sweden), The Red Cross and Amnesty (Swedish Group).

Our organisation has developed with our activity plans for every year. During 1998 two special departments were founded: the Women Department and the Youth Department. These two department were founded by the our women respectively youth member organisations working with their respective target groups in all the member organisations.

A couple of years ago FIAS was chosen by the government as one of few consulting non-profit making organisations to contribute to the revision of the Act of Swedish Citizenship. Worth mentioning that almost all our suggestions were taken into consideration in the new Act.

FIAS is an active member of the EUMF (European Union Migrants' Forum) - an umbrella organisation for the National and migrant non-profit making organisations inside the EU. FIAS was among the pioneers who founded EUMF's Swedish Support Group.

Some years later, FIAS was granted the responsibility to represent EUMF on International arenas in questions concerning human rights. FIAS has also contributed to the foundation of EUMF's Youth Support Group, and our representative was elected into the Support Group's managing board as the only representative for Sweden and Scandinavia.

FIAS is not just the only non-profit making organisations that represent Iraqis in Sweden, it is as well the only of its kind in Europe and the first organisation of its kind with Middle Eastern roots to be granted full membership in EUMF.
